What's that on the baby?

Its vernix and it is protection for your baby's skin. When a baby's skin is developing during pregnancy, it's covered with this thick, white, layer of vernix. The new, delicate skin is then protected from the acidic quality of amniotic fluid. It may even provide some lubricant for the delivery process as well!

Vernix is also thought to keep infection at bay - its pretty cool stuff so no need to clean it off. You can let it absorb, let it wipe off naturally when handling your baby or rub it in to their skin.
